Coral Taxonomy Program

Accurately identifying coral families and species is essential for research, monitoring, and restoration efforts. It also provides a deeper understanding of their evolution, life history, and fosters an appreciation for their diversity. In this course, you’ll learn to identify corals underwater by their anatomical features and on land by their skeletal structures. You will also pick up tips for remembering names and identifying corals in their natural habitat. The course will cover the most common species in your region and equip you with skills to identify species wherever you dive next.

 

Taxonomic Classification: Grasp the taxonomic system used to classify hard corals.

Family and Genus Recognition: Learn to identify coral families and genera.

Latin Name Mnemonics: Explore mnemonic strategies for remembering Latin names.

Anatomy and Morphology: Become familiar with coral anatomy and skeletal features for identification.

1 day (2 dives): Rp 2.500.000

2 days (4 dives): Rp 4.900.000

Prerequisites: 

  • Open Water Scuba Diver
  • Be at least 12 years  
  • Perform excellent buoyancy
  • Must have completed The Ecological Monitoring Program (EMP) certification
