Coral Reef & Ecology Program

The Coral Reef Ecology & Monitoring Course is a condensed version of the full Ecological Monitoring Program (EMP), tailored for students who cannot commit to the full 5-day EMP course. This course provides an introduction to coral reef ecology and teaches students how to scientifically observe and study reefs. Participants will learn to use real-world scientific sampling and reef survey techniques, and they will be certified to conduct their own surveys and submit data to an online database. Students who complete this certification can return later to finish the full EMP course.

This course includes:

  • Ecological Insights: Enhance your knowledge of coral reef ecology and the environmental challenges these ecosystems face.

  • Effective Monitoring Techniques: Learn various survey methods used by reef managers to monitor coral reef health.

  • Substrate Assessment: Learn to assess substrate types, hard coral coverage/growth forms, and coral health.
